Etymology

Berger (see Bergerocactus) + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. An invalid “correction” of the name Bergerocactus, based on the idea that cacti with elongated stems should be called –cereus rather than –cactus.

Britton and Rose published the name Bergerocereus emoryi in 1909, but this was clearly an error for Bergerocactus emoryi.
