Bartschella

Bartschella Britton & Rose ()
🌵 Author(s)

🌵 Type Bartschella schumannii
Etymology

Bartsch + Latin -ella, diminutive suffix, also used to form generic names (usually from personal names) without implication of smallness (Stearn, Botanical Latin. 3rd Edition: 289. 1983). Named for Paul Bartsch, “curator in the United States National Museum, distinguished in conchology, who has sent us cacti from many out of the way places.”

The rather unusual suffix –ella instead of the far more common –ia was presumably chosen to avoid confusion with Bartsia L. (1754, Scrophulariaceae), which is also spelled Bartschia (named for Johann Bartsch, latinized Johannes Bartsius).
