Etymology

Named for German botanist Friedrich Ritter (1898-1989), who collected the species in Mexico. Bödeker (1928): “I owe this bizarre, strangely pretty and beautiful plant to the kindness of Frau Konrektor Hildeg[ard] Winter in Fechenheim near Frankfurt am Main, whose brother, Herr Friedr[ich] Ritter, was the first to find and collect it over in Mexico, together with other novelties, and in whose honor I have named it.”
