Etymology

Latin vestÄ«tus ‘clothed’. Not explained by Salm-Dyck, presumably for the hairy stems. Salm-Dyck described the areoles as “covered with dirty yellow felt, with a tuft of bristles at the top, numerous fine spines in the middle, and wool at the bottom”.
