Etymology

Named for German-Chilean botanist Rudolph Amandus (Rodolfo Amando) Philippi (1808-1904), who discovered the species in Chile. Buxbaum changed the spelling of the epithet from philippi to philippii when he made the combination under Austrocactus. While this is arguably a better spelling, the original spelling is not incorrect and may not be changed.
