Named for Pierre Bertin (1800-1891), plant collector in Patagonia. The original spelling bertini was miscorrected to bertinii by Britton and Rose when they made the combination under Austrocactus. Since the name Bertin has the “well-established latinized form” Bertinus (genitive Bertini), the epithet is correctly spelled bertini under article 60.8 of the International Code of Nomenclature.
