Latin ornatus ‘adorned’. Not explained by De Candolle. Presumably for the attractive spination or the overall appearance of the plant. Hardly for “the attractive appearance of the flowers” (Genaust, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996), which De Candolle did not describe.
