Etymology

Latin căpŭt Mĕdūsae ‘Medusa’s head’. For the very long and slender tubercles that give the plant the appearance of the snake-haired Medusa of Greek mythology. Compare Mammillaria caput-medusae (Cactaceae), Euphorbia caput-medusae (Euphorbiaceae), Tillandsia caput-medusae (Bromeliaceae) etc.
