Etymology

Latin căpÅ­t MÄ•dÅ«sae ‘Medusa’s head’. For the very long and slender tubercles that give the plant the appearance of the snake-haired Gorgon Medusa of Greek mythology. Compare Mammillaria caput-medusae (Cactaceae), Euphorbia caput-medusae (Euphorbiaceae), Tillandsia caput-medusae (Bromeliaceae) etc.

Astrophyton caput-medusae (Linnaeus, 1758) (= Gorgonocephalus caputmedusae) is a species of echinoderms.
