Greek chasma (stem chasmat-) ‘chasm, wide opening’ + Greek thÄ“lÄ“ ‘nipple’. For the “fissured” (Schumann: “zerklüftet”, from Kluft ‘chasm’) tubercles. Compare the name of the only included species, Ariocarpus fissuratus.
