Etymology

Named for Russian Prince Vasiliy Viktorovich Kochubey (“Kotschoubey”) (1812-1850), whose family supported the expedition during which Wilhelm Friedrich von Karwinsky discovered this species. Kochubey sold a specimen the size of an apricot he had received from Karwinsky to French nurseryman Jean-François Cels for 1000 francs—reportedly more than the weight of the plant in gold.

Wilhelm Barthlott (in Anderson, Cactus Family: 9. 2001) erroneously claimed that the species was discovered by and named for Otto von Kotzebue (1787-1846).

Schumann germanized Lemaire’s original spelling kotschoubeyanum to kotschubeyanus when he published the combination under Ariocarpus. Lemaire consistently spelled the epithet with ou (Anderson in Amer. J. Bot. 50(7): 727. 1963)
