Etymology

Latin Dub(e)niōrum ‘of the Dubens’. Named for Czech cactus enthusiasts Miloš Duben and Tomáš Duben, who raised this hybrid.

The epithet is sometimes corrected to dubeniorum, but the spelling dubniorum, which reflects Czech inflected forms like Dubnových, was without a doubt chosen on purpose (cf. Gymnocalycium dubniorum Halda & Milt) and is not a correctable error under the International Code of Nomenclature.
