Etymology

Named for Mexican botanical collector George Sebastián Hinton (1949-). Stuppy and Taylor:

In 1981 German cactophiles discovered an interesting dwarf form of Ariocarpus fissuratus planted outside an Indian hut near Highway 57, north of San Luis Potosí, Mexico (Lausser & Scherer 1984). In 1984 the same plant was located in habitat, south of Matehuala, by Sr George S. Hinton* and subsequently investigated by FitzMaurice & Davis (1987). Mr FitzMaurice asked one of us (NPT) whether this plant might be worth describing as a new taxon and, if so, that it be named for Sr Hinton. We are in no doubt that this plant represents a new variety of A. fissuratus and are happy to name it as requested by Mr FitzMaurice, who has supplied the material used in the preparation of the description and holotype.

*Grandson of George Hinton (b. England, 1882, d. Mexico, 1943), a metallurgist, who together with his son James (Jaimie) made extensive herbarium collections of the flora of central and southern Mexico, 1931-1941 (Hinton & Rzedowski 1975).
