Named for German cactus enthusiast Franz Mönnighoff. Fischer: “I have chosen the name of the hybrid in honor of my dear friend, the excellent cactus grower Mr. City Treasurer Mönnighoff in Werl.” Fischer spelled the epithet Mönnighoffii. Borg misspelled it Moenninghoffii.
