Etymology

Greek megas ‘large’ + Greek rhiza ‘root’. For the “large and fleshy” roots. The original spelling megarrhizus was miscorrected to megarhizus (see Cereus pachyrrhizus) by Britton and Rose when they made the combination under Ancistrocactus.
