Etymology

Greek akantha ‘spine’ + Rhipsalis. For the spiny areoles. Originally a subgenus of Rhipsalis.

Schumann later (Gesamtbeschr. Kakt. Nachtr. 1903; Keys Monogr. Cact. 1903) adopted the spelling Acanthorrhipsalis (cf. Calamorhipsalis, Goniorhipsalis, Ophiorhipsalis, Phyllorhipsalis).

The name was used in another sense by Kimnach in 1983 (Cact. Succ. J. (US) 55(4): 177-181. 1983). This genus was replaced by Lymanbensonia.
