Winteria

Winteria F.Ritter, ()
🌡 Author(s)
🌡 Type Winteria aureispina
🌡 Replaced by Winterocereus
Etymology

Named for Friedrich Ritter’s sister Hildegard β€œHilde” Winter, who distributed the seeds he collected in South America.

In 1966 Ritter published the replacement name Hildewintera because he considered Winteria confusingly similar to Wintera Murray (1784, Winteraceae) (see article 75 of the then-applicable Montreal Code or Edinburgh Code). That is debatable, but Winteria F.Ritter is certainly a younger homonym of the fungus genus Winteria Sacc. (1878). Hildewintera was not validly published. The correct replacement name is Winterocereus.
