Etymology

Trochilus ‘streamertail (a genus of hummingbirds)’, from Greek trochilos ‘Egyptian plover (Pluvianus aegyptius, a bird species)’ + Cactus. The plants are pollinated by hummingbirds (not from the genus Trochilus, which is endemic to Jamaica, while Trochilocactus is endemic to Guatemala).
