Etymology

Greek thrix (stem trich-) ‘hair’ + anthos ‘flower’ Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general (the compound should correctly be Trichanthocereus). For the long white hairs on the hypanthium. Not thrix + “Anthocereus” (Genaust, Etymologisches WΓΆrterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 2. Auflage. 1983).
