Etymology
🌵 Author(s) | Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Berge |

Latin teres, teretis ‘terete’ + Latin caulis ‘stem’ (the compound should correctly be Tereticaulis). The genus was established for Opuntia species with cylindrical rather than flat stems.
Considered validly published by Werner Greuter (Kanchi Gandhi, IPNI, personal communication, October 7, 2021).
This name is often incorrectly attributed to Ernst Berge (1836-1897), who was only six years old at the time of publication.
