Etymology

Greek tephra ‘ashes’ + Cactus. For the color of the epidermis (“Tephra: cendre, couleur de l’Γ©piderme”), described by Lemaire as ash-brown (“brun cendrΓ©”). Not for the color of the spines (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004).
