Etymology

Latin rōdēns (stem rōdent-) ‘rodent’ + Greek phila ‘(female) friend’ (the compound should correctly be Rodentiphila). According to Ritter the fruits of Rodentiophila atacamensis (= Eriosyce rodentiophila) are eaten by rodents that disperse the seeds. Vernacular name: sandillón de los ratones ‘mice Eriosyce‘ (Hoffmann & Walter, Cactáceas en la flora silvestre de Chile. Segunda edición: 174. 2004).
