Greek phyllon ‘leaf’ + Greek arthron ‘joint’ or Latin artus ‘joint’. For the jointed cladodes (flattened stems), thought by Necker to be leaves. Probably a modification of the pre-Linnaean name Phyllanthus, which Necker listed (“Phylanthus”) as a synonym in Elem. Bot. (Necker) 3: 404. 1790. Sometimes corrected to Phyllarthrus or Phyllartus.
