Etymology

Oehme + Latin -a, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a vowel other than a (Rec. 60B.1(a), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for German painter and cactus enthusiast Arthur Johannes “Hanns” Oehme (1899-1944). Buxbaum and Oehme had published the genus Rapicactus together in 1942 during Oehme’s service at the eastern front, where he would perish two years later.
