Etymology

Greek neos ‘new’ + Mammillaria. This replacement name for Mammillaria Haw. (1812) was published because that name had previously been used for a genus of algae (Mammillaria Stackhouse, 1809), but the latter name was rejected in favor of Mammillaria Haw. in 1930.
