Etymology

Greek neos ‘new’ + Evans + Latin -ĭa, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Named “in honor of J. Whitman Evans of Phoenix, Arizona, who rediscovered it and first noticed its divergence from accepted genera” (Marshall). The prefix neo– advoids homonymy with Evansia Salisb. (1812, Iridaceae). Evansia C.Douin & Schiffner (1913) is a moss genus and Evansia O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1900 a genus of dwarf spiders.
