Latin myrtillus βblueberryβ (see Myrtillocactus) + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. An illegitimate replacement name for Myrtillocactus, based on the idea that cacti with elongated stems should be called βcereus rather than βcactus.
