Etymology

Greek malakos ‘soft’ + Greek karpos ‘fruit’. For the soft fruit.

Although this name was widely used in cactus literature, it is an illegitimate younger homonym of Malacocarpus Fisch. & C.A.Mey. (1843), a genus in the family Zygophyllaceae. The replacement name Wigginsia was published in 1964.
