Etymology

Lyman Benson + Latin -Ä­a, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for American botanist Lyman Benson (1909-1993), Author of The Cacti of the United States and Canada. Bensonia Buckman (1845) is a genus of fossil plants.

This is a replacement name for Acanthorhipsalis Kimnach (in Cact. Succ. J. (US) 55(4): 177-181. 1983), which is a younger homonym of Acanthorhipsalis Britton & Rose.
