Etymology

Greek gymnos ‘naked’ + Greek anthos β€˜flower’. For the hairless hypanthium.

Until 2000 this name was considered a younger homonym of Gymnanthus Jungh (1840, Magnoliaceae). The replacement name Neogymnantha is now superfluous.

Gymnanthe T.Taylor ex Lehm. (1844) is a moss genus.
