Etymology

Latin gummi ‘gum’ + Cactus. A manuscript name from the early 1960s for a possible new genus based on Parodia gummifera (= Uebelmannia gummifera), which is named after the gum-like mucilage in the plant body. Ritter: “Later [1967], [Leopoldo] Horst […] found several other species of the same new genus, which caused a sensation in the cactus world. It turned out, however, that these species do not have gum canals in their bodies like gummifera, so that I had to abandon my generic name Gummocactus. Buining then published this genus under the name Uebelmannia with the type species “Parodia gummifera Backbg. & Voll”.”
