Etymology

Fries + Latin -Δa, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for Swedish botanist Robert Elias Fries (1876-1966), who had described (but not validly published) the type species.

This is a younger homonym of Friesia Spreng. (1818, Euphorbiaceae).
