Etymology

Greek ēōs ‘dawn’ and Eocene + Opuntia, called by Chaney “the dawn cactus of the Eocene”. A fossil plant originally thought to be an Opuntia-like cactus, but now considered a member of the family Cyperaceae. Sometimes incorrectly called Euopuntia (Greek eu- ‘true’).
