Etymology

Latin caerŭlus ‘azure’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. Guiggi (Cactology 5(Suppl. 13): 4. 2022): “a compound name from Latin caeruleus [sic] “by the colour of the sky” referred to the glaucous stem, and Latin cereus “candle” for its morphology.” He later corrected the etymology (Cactology 5(Suppl. 14): 6. 2023): “The etymology of Caerulocereus Guiggi is more properly derived from the Latin Caerulus ”blue”, an alternative form of Caeruleus.”

Compare Azureocereus.
