Etymology

Britton + Rose + Latin -a, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a vowel other than a (Rec. 60B.1(a), International Code of Nomenclature). Named “in honor of the brave monographers”, i.e. American botanists Nathaniel Lord Britton (1859-1934) and Joseph Nelson Rose (1862-1928), authors of The Cactaceae. This was intended as a replacement name for Echinofossulocactus, a forgotten genus resurrected by Britton and Rose.

Compare Brittonia, Roseia, Roseocactus and perhaps Roseocereus.
