Etymology

Brittonia + Latin -Äa, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Not explained by Armstrong. Presumably named for American botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton (1859-1934). The name was validly published by Armstrong, who quoted from a letter in which the genus is attributed to Houghton. Previously published, without a validating description, by Frick (in J. Cact. Succ. Soc. Amer. 2(8): 407. 1931). Brittonia Kuntze (Revis. Gen. Pl. 1: 173. 1891) is an error for Brissonia Neck. (1790) (Fabaceae).
