Etymology

Berger + Cactus. Named for German botanist Alwin Berger (1871-1931), “author of an excellent discussion of the genus Cereus, who was long in charge of the garden of Sir Thomas Hanbury at La Mortola [Mortolopuntia], Italy”.

Britton and Rose accidentally published the only species in this genus as Bergerocereus emoryi. See also Bergerocereus.
