Etymology

German Azteken ‘Aztecs’ + Latin -ĭum, a suffix to form plant genus names. “The body [of Aztekium ritteri] has a very peculiar structure similar to a braided crown that calls to mind the sculptures of the indigenous people of Mexico, the Aztecs.”
