Etymology

Greek akantha ‘spine’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. For the spiny fruits. Originally a subsection of the genus Cereus containing species “with spiny fruit, but not beloning to Echinocereus” (Engelmann 1862).
